TCM Failure Indicators

Harsh or Flared Shifts
Truck slams into gear or flares on the 2-3. Adaptation data from the dead transmission is still loaded.

A freshly rebuilt or reman transmission dropped in after the vehicle's adaptation data was developed for the old unit will shift harshly, flare on 2-3, or limp. The TCM needs an adaptation clear and fast-learn cycle before normal shift quality returns.
New, reman, and used TCMs ship without VIN data. They require a VIN write, hardware option-byte configuration, and calibration flash via OEM diagnostic software before the transmission will operate and before the PCM/TCM handshake completes.
Replacement valve body assemblies on many modern transmissions (10R80, 6L80, 8HP70, 9G-Tronic) include a TCM or solenoid calibration data set that must be VIN-paired and adaptation-reset in software before the unit will function.
