About this service.

Why Tuners and Engine Builders Choose Core Auto Logic

A new ECU ships virgin - no VIN, no calibration, no adaptation data. A donor ECU comes locked to a different vehicle. The work that turns either one into a running engine on your build is OEM-grade software, bench programming hardware, and the patience to do the full sequence every time.

OEM Software on 40+ Platforms
Factory-grade programming access for Ford, GM, Chrysler/Stellantis, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VAG and more. Correct calibration for the VIN, every time - no aftermarket guesswork.
OEM
Cloning + VIN Write Both Supported
We clone the full flash and EEPROM image from a working ECU to a replacement, preserving adaptation data and immobilizer pairing. Or we VIN-write a virgin module. Whichever path your build needs.
CLONE
Bench Programming - No Vehicle Required
We program ECUs off-vehicle using bench power and CAN simulation. Useful when the truck does not run, the harness is damaged, or you need the module ready before installation day.

How we plan this service

Reviewed service-source signals help us choose the access path, intake details, and calibration workflow before the job starts.

Bench and boot cloning paths

Some control modules require direct bench or boot access so immobilizer, VIN, coding, and calibration data can be transferred from the original unit to a donor.

What to send

Send the original module, donor module, VIN, and a short fault history. Include water, fire, or no-communication symptoms.

OEM
Factory-grade programming access for Ford, GM, Chrysler/Stellantis, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, Subaru, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VAG, and more. The correct calibration for the VIN - every time.
ECU Cloning
CLONE
We clone the full flash and EEPROM image from the original ECU to a replacement module - preserving adaptation data, immobilizer pairing, and VIN linkage without needing the vehicle network.
Bench Programming - No Running Vehicle Required
BENCH
We program ECUs off-vehicle using bench power and CAN simulation. Useful when the vehicle does not run, the wiring harness is damaged, or you need the module programmed before installation.
Idle Relearn & Throttle Adaptation
IDLE
Every ECU flash includes the idle relearn procedure and throttle body adaptation cycle so the engine returns to correct idle quality immediately after installation - not after 100 miles of "adaptation".
Mail-In Service - Nationwide
MAIL
Ship the ECU with the VIN and engine configuration. We flash, bench-test communication, and return with a programming report. Most ECUs turn around in 1-2 business days.

ECU Programming Failure Indicators

Symptoms that point to an ECU that needs programming, cloning or recovery. If the mechanical work checks out and the engine still will not run right, the software is the problem.

No-Start After ECU Swap
P0606 or U0100 codes after a module replacement. The new ECU is not paired to the immobilizer or the calibration is missing.
Failed Software Update
Communication dropped mid-flash or the wrong calibration file was sent. Module is bricked or in an undefined state.
Rough Idle After Replacement
New module loaded, vehicle starts but idles rough or stalls. Adaptation data missing - throttle and idle relearn never ran.
Immobilizer Mismatch
Engine cranks but will not start. Replacement ECU does not recognize the existing keys or BCM security pairing.
Donor ECU Locked to Other Vehicle
Junkyard or used ECU shows the wrong VIN at scan. Module needs a VIN overwrite plus IMMO re-pair before it will pass start authorization.
Performance Drift After TSB
A bulletin-required calibration was not applied. Idle quality, knock response or AFM/DFM behavior off-spec until the current TSB ships.

Common reasons customers book this service

Tap a card to see what triggers this service and which systems are affected.

New and remanufactured ECUs ship without VIN data and without the vehicle-specific calibration. They require a full VIN write, hardware parameter configuration, and calibration flash via OEM diagnostic software before the engine will run correctly.
P0600-series communication codes or P0606 (ECU processor fault) after a module swap usually mean the programming was incomplete. We finish the sequence: VIN write, idle relearn, throttle body adaptation, and immobilizer-pairing if required.
A dealer or aftermarket software update that went wrong - dropped communication mid-write, wrong calibration file - leaves the ECU in an undefined state. We recover from chip or bench with the correct OEM calibration.
When a donor engine comes with its own ECU, the module must be re-programmed to the recipient vehicle's VIN and immobilizer system, or cloned from the original ECU, so the engine starts and runs on the new chassis.
OEM technical service bulletins addressing idle quality, cold start, knock response, AFM/DFM behavior, or emissions compliance require a reflash of the ECU calibration. We carry current TSB calibration subscriptions for the platforms we support.

From quote to delivery

How we move a job from intake to fully programmed and verified.

  1. Provide VIN and Engine ConfigurationShare the VIN, engine code, transmission type, and a description of the situation (new module, failed flash, clone request). We confirm the correct calibration file and quote within 4 business hours.
Provide VIN and Engine Configuration - Core Auto Logic ecu-program-clone step 1
  2. Module IntakeFor mobile DFW service, we come to the vehicle. For mail-in, ship the ECU in anti-static packaging - we provide a tracked return label. For cloning jobs, ship both the original and the replacement module.
Module Intake - Core Auto Logic ecu-program-clone step 2
  3. VIN Write, Calibration Flash, and AdaptationWe write the VIN, flash the correct OEM calibration, run idle relearn and throttle adaptation, and perform a CAN bench simulation to verify communication before the module leaves our bench.
VIN Write, Calibration Flash, and Adaptation - Core Auto Logic ecu-program-clone step 3
  4. Return with Programming ReportModule ships back with a full report: VIN confirmation, calibration file ID, software version, and post-program status. Install and start the vehicle - no extended adaptation drives required.
Return with Programming Report - Core Auto Logic ecu-program-clone step 4

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes on most platforms. We overwrite the donor VIN and re-flash with the calibration for your vehicle. Some late-model ECUs use rolling IMMO tokens that prevent used-module transfers - we confirm before you source the donor.
The most common cause is an immobilizer mismatch - the new ECU does not recognize the existing keys or body module security pairing. We resolve this by re-pairing the IMMO system as part of the programming sequence.
Yes. Bench programming is our standard approach for mail-in service. We use a bench CAN harness to simulate the vehicle network. For platforms that require live vehicle parameters during programming, we note this at quote time.
Cloning transfers the complete flash image including any installed tune. If you want the replacement module to match the original exactly - including an aftermarket tune - cloning achieves that. If you want stock calibration on the replacement, we flash from the OEM calibration file instead.
In practice, "programming" refers to the full sequence: VIN write, calibration flash, hardware parameter setup, and adaptation initialization. "Flashing" refers specifically to writing the calibration file. We always perform the full programming sequence - not just the file write.
Yes. We service diesel ECUs on Duramax, PowerStroke, Cummins, and common European diesel platforms. Diesel ECU work includes the same programming sequence plus injector coding where required by the platform.
